Meet Scott, Our UX/UI Designer

Jonathan Cook

Scott is ambitious, hard working, and geared with a serious talent for UX/UI design.

It’s with great excitement that we get to welcome Scott and his talented digital design skills to the team. Read on as we follow tradition and ask Scott some hard hitting questions.

What made you want to join Neon Hive?

The chance to work at one of New Zealand's top web design agencies was something that I couldn’t pass upon. As a Hamiltonian by heart, being able to work alongside local businesses I grew up with and help them grow is what led me to apply for this role. I’ve always aspired to give back through what I create and I knew joining the Neon Hive team would help me achieve this - and more!

What aspect of working with us are you most excited about?

The ability to work with clients and solve real-world problems would be the things I’m most excited about. I also would be lying if I didn’t say I was keen to work with this talented team too!

Describe your personality in 3 words.

Hmm... Compassionate, hard-working, and optimistic.

Who in your life inspires you?

Definitely my parents. Their insane work-ethics and drive to succeed has been something I’ve always been inspired by and aimed to pursue through my own work.

Who would you most like to swap lives with for a day and why?

At the moment, I’d have to say Elon Musk. I would just love to know what occurs in his every day and find out what on earth is happening with that Cybertruck?!
*Editor's note: is the cybertruck the return of punk??

Tell us about your favourite design project to date.

Seriously tough decision but I’d have to say my “Anatomical Tolerance” product design project. This project was sick because we got to design our own rings, send them to a US Company, and get them made in the material of our choice! It was by far the most expensive project I’d ever created. But it was a great project to work on - plus we got a ring at the end of it!

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Most of my inspiration derives from other designers and artists who are active on sites such as Pinterest,, Instagram, and Behance. These sites allow me to find out what’s considered ‘current’ in the design Industry and find practices that I can best implement into what I create.

Your top 3 favourite podcasts/books?

In all honesty, I don’t really read or listen to podcasts that often. But I’d have to say, my top three would be:

  1. The I Love Ugly Podcast
  2. Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series
  3. Richie McCaw’s Auto-Biography, The Real McCaw

What do you enjoy doing when you're not working?

I’m a mad sports fanatic, so watching and playing sports such as basketball, rugby, football, and cricket are things I love to do outside of working. I also love hanging out with friends and family when I can and will often be seen catching up with them during my spare time.

What music do you listen to when designing?

To be honest, I have a pretty diverse music taste which changes a lot… but what I’ve been jamming to recently has been the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Frank Ocean, and RL Grime - just to name a few. These are just some of the artists I listen to. I basically listen to anything whilst I’m working on projects so if you have any suggestions I’d love to hear them!! My Spotify handle is @scottjowsey so feel free to check it out! (shameless plug).

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us?

I’m low-key the biggest closet ‘hypebeast’ of all time. I absolutely love shoes and if I had the money I would dedicate a lot of time to building my dream shoe collection.  One of the shoes I’d love to add to my collection would be  Sean Wotherspoon’s Air Max 97 shoe. They are honestly a work of art and I would stop at all costs to get my hands on them! Check them out.

Lastly, and most importantly, how do you take your coffee?

I honestly haven’t found my perfect blend yet! I’d have to say either a mocha or long black. Open to suggestions though!
*Editor's note: two ends of the spectrum there!
